Despite its symbolic location- GwangHwaMoon in Seoul, National Museum of Korean Contemporary History (MUCH) has an issue with attracting people due to not only the opaque and exclusive facade, but also an isolated entrance that is set back by the large unaccessible lawn from the side walk. Thus, people with a clear purpose of visiting the museum enter the building. Still, even if they arrive at the lobby, there is no comfortable waiting space where people can wait for someone or inform them about exhibitions and events at the museum. Plus, since the museum is a public facility, there is a complicated administrative issue with accommodating the F&B program.
This project was initiated to relieve this issue. If a space that welcomes visitors and pedestrians walking around the site is provided, although the area is not large, people would easily enter the museum and be naturally exposed to the exhibition and the events.
Meanwhile, MUCH covers the extremely complicated and diverse content of Korean contemporary history. It is impossible to capture a specific historical event as a design concept, because no item can represent the identity of the museum. Since the building itself is a renovated historical monument, a design idea based on the rediscovery and retranslation of the building seems appropriate.
Accordingly, translucent glass and stainless steel from the building facade, granite, black stone, and white oak from the interior were selected as a basic material palette to integrate the existing design language. Plus, various-almost chaotic- species of vegetation are unexpectedly spreaded throughout the museum. So the landscape was an important element to consider, as well.
Since the depth of the space is not deep, the atmosphere of the lounge essentially depends on the mood of the neighboring outdoor scene. Previously, unpleasant outdoor floor tiles with ugly benches were visible from the inside. Also, the awkard height of the trimmed bushes stood like a fence behind the benches. To resolve this issue, the outdoor space was designed with reinterpreted tranditional Korean landscape garden. Now, the outdoor garden is accessible without entering the building, and encourages the flow of the public.
After redefining the boundary of the lounge with black Korean traditional brick, East side of the lounge was landscaped with vital vegetation with large leaves. They correspond with the outdoor garden and create a dialog between inside and outside. A translucent glass layer covers, and blurs the silhouette of the vegetation, mystifying the depth of the space behind the glass partition. Eventually, people recognize the lounge space much wider than the actual size of the space.
A black Korean traditional brick flooring creates a calm background for the lounge. The white oak elements- benches, partitions, shelves, and louvers of the ceiling generate a rhythm of horizontality and verticality reminiscent of Korean culture. Warm white granite elements establish a sense of heavyness to the space, and provide benches and minimal gardens. Translucent glass columns envelope the existing columns, and gently glow like Korean traditional paper lanterns. Vaguely reflecting stainless steel finishes covering the existing walls, columns, and the service area vibrate the scene and add a sense of subtlety.
Although not spacious in size, the studio hopes a deliberately designed lounge contributes vitalization of the museum and delights the experience of the GwangHwaMoon Plaza.
대한민국역사박물관은 광화문이라는 상징적 입지에도 불구하고, 다소 폐쇄적인 입면과 넓은 잔디밭 너머 깊숙하게 들어가 있는 입구 탓에 방문객들의 유도에 어려움을 겪고 있다. 오로지 방문목적을 지닌 사람들만이 건물에 진입하게 되는데, 로비에 도착하더라도 누군가를 기다리거나 편안하게 시간을 보내며 박물관의 전시 정보를 확인할 수 있는 장소가 부족했다. 또한 공공기관인 까닭에, 식음료를 판매하는 시설을 유치하기에는 여러 가지 행정적인 제약들이 존재했다.
이에 따라, 방문객들은 물론이고, 박물관의 전시에 관심이 덜한 행인들도 비바람이나 뜨거운 햇빛을 피해 편안하게 머물며 쉴 수 있는 실내 공간을 계획하고자 하였다. 비록 크지 않은 공간이지만, 사람들의 유동을 만들고 그들이 편하게 머물 수 있는 공간이 마련된다면, 자연스럽게 박물관의 컨텐츠가 대중들에게 노출될 수 있다고 보았다.
이에 따라, 건물의 입면과 실내 마감재료에서 볼 수 있는 불투명의 뽀얀 유리와 스테인리스 스틸, 화강암, 검은색 석재, 그리고 건물의 내부에서 발견되는 밝은 계열의 나무 요소와 연관될 수 있는 화이트 오크를 기본적 재료 팔레트로 선정하게 되었다. 또한, 건물의 실내에는 다양한 종류의 식재들이 예상하지 못할 정도로 무작위로 산재해 있었는데, 이러한 맥락과도 이어질 수 있는 디자인적 방안을 모색하게 되었다.
주어진 공간의 깊이가 그리 깊지 않기에, 라운지의 분위기는 그곳에 앉아서 바라보게 되는 외부공간의 모습이 결정적이라 판단했다. 현재는 어정쩡한 높이의 관목들이 광화대로를 향한 조망을 막고 있으며, 아름답지 못한 벤치와 난데없는 붉은 바닥만이 보인다. 따라서 우선 라운지와 면한 외부공간의 조경을 한국적이면서도 현대적인 분위기로 디자인하여 전체적인 분위기를 조성했다. 또한 건물의 실내에 들어오지 않더라도, 사람들이 머물고 쉴 수 있는 장소를 의도하여 사람들의 유동을 만들고자 하였다.
또한 외부의 작은 정원과 대구를 이룰 수 있도록 실내의 동측 벽에 식재들을 무성하게 배치하고, 이를 반투명의 파티션으로 은은하게 가려서 그 깊이감을 알 수 없도록 계획했다. 이를 통해, 외부와 내부의 조경요소가 서로 대화를 나누고 이어지도록 만들었고, 이는 외부 정원을 실내의 배경으로 끌어들이는 가운데 내외부의 경계를 흐리면서 실제 주어진 실내공간보다 넓게 인식될 수 있도록 하였다.
흑색 전벽돌의 바닥은 라운지 공간의 차분한 배경을 만들어주고, 벤치와 파티션, 작은 전시안내대와 천장의 루버에 사용된 따뜻한 촉감의 화이트 오크 요소들은 현대적인 형태이지만 전통적인 느낌을 간직하면서 전체적인 분위기를 만든다. 또한 묵직하지만 온화한 느낌의 백색 화강암은 라운지 공간에 무게감을 주면서 사람들이 앉을 수 있는 자리를 내어주고, 그 중심에는 절제된 식재들이 놓여서 외부와 내부 파티션 너머의 조경요소들을 이어준다. 뽀얀 창호지처럼 빛나는 기둥과 천장의 조명은 은은하게 주변을 밝혀주며, 어렴풋이 주변을 반사하는 스테인리스스틸 마감은 벽과 기둥, 서비스 공간을 숨기면서 공간에 깊이감을 더한다.
비록 크지 않은 면적이지만, 세심한 고민을 통해 디자인된 라운지가 부디 대한민국역사박물관의 활성화와 광화문 광장의 즐거운 경험에 기여하기를 바란다.
